What do I need to bring?

You will need to wear trousers that will stretch a bit - tracksuit bottoms are ideal - indoor only gym shoes, and a T-shirt. You will also want to bring something to drink, as fencing can be thirsty work.

How much does it cost?

Club Fees: are $250 per 3-month session. Individual lessons are $25/30 minutes.

Equipment: A new set of starting equipment (mask, glove, weapon, jacket, and chest protector for women) typically costs around $350-$400. We also have used equipment listed here where you can buy old equipment from the club for a much cheaper price.

If you're interested in purchasing your own new equipment, feel free to contact us for recommendations on what to get and where. We have recommended vendors listed here.

Membership with the CFF (Canadian Fencing Federation) is required. You can register at https://fencingontario.ca. Memberships are approximately $35 to $80/year (depending on your level). Please email or bring a copy of your valid CFF number (It will look something like this: C18-1234) before your first night.

Can I try it to see if I like it?

Yes! We have a program using one size fits all plastic equipment. Try a 30 minute class in a small group (1-6 fencers). Contact us for details and to book a trial class.

You’re also welcome to visit us on a club night. Have a look, and ask questions. Just let us know you’re coming!

Can my son or daughter who is less than 10 years old start fencing?

Unfortunately, no. We typically start kids in fencing at age 10-12 depending on the kids.

Considerations for when to start fencing are how big they are physically and if they can properly handle the weapon. Also, mentally they need to be able to understand more abstract concepts and deal with winning and losing.

We’ve made the mistake before of starting kids too early, and it often does more long-term harm to their fencing than good. This usually results in frustration and quitting fencing early.

Our best advice for a young boy or girl interested in fencing is to stay active and play other games and sports so they are fit and ready to start fencing later on.

What weapons are used at your club? Are there competitions?

We train all three weapons at our club (Foil, Epee, and Sabre). We offer both electric and dry fencing.

There are a lot of competition options! There are local beginner circuits, Provincial level, and National level. We have youth competitions in various age groups ( -11, -13, -15, -19). And finally we also have veteran ages (40+, 50+, 60+, 70+). There’s a competition category for everyone!

Don’t want to compete? Don’t worry, we also have many members who just fence for the fun of it!
